Lock is manual and only works by pressing TAB, if you want to switch target just move the mouse left or right depending where target is until it switches.
Look, they might not call it "locking", but there is a soft lock that auto focuses you onto a target. You cannot just run by the bad guy it will turn you even without tabing.
OP, if you try to use sprint during combat it will unlock that soft lock and help you run away. There is no way in game to adjust that soft lock though im afraid.
