I don't believe the first one was ever resolved to the OP's satisfaction.
You could try only wearing leg armor for training maybe.
Or maybe melee combat from horse back.
Or maybe find a dog that is willing to attack you
Or jumping up in the air to try and catch arrows with your legs.
But this all seems rather contrived.
My gear was like - some brown hut/cap, leather gloves, tight black trousers, black sneaky boots, black saxon gambison, in mid game i added a black aachen brigantine and some neck chainmail thingy. I don´t know the exact names of those in english. I could get more armor while still having zero noise - but it would raise my visibility - and it´s also about the looks - no? :o)
If You loot some leg armor it should be damaged, because usually every enemy has damaged gear - that´s one reason why You are a bit OP compared to them.
What I did was challenge Milan to a fistfight and jumped whenever he attacked. For best results, I jumped on top of the fence of the arena we were fighting at to ensure that he was hitting my legs.
