While a New PC (MB/CPU/RAM/HD/Video) is only good for 2-3 years, a good monitor can last over 5-6 years.
I suggest your own research, and here are the research sources i would recommend:

Think of what you want and need. 2k is more than enough for a 27" desktop and you sit far away. 4k is overkill unless you have more than 27". Imo go 1080p for anything small, 2k for desktop size and 4k for 32"+ TV/big monitor.
I'd pick higher res and larger screen to 144, from my experience. Adaptive sync is also a big one!
I'd aim for a 2k@60 desktop with adaptive sync. Not blowing a fortune on a slow 4k or a 144hz first person shooter monitor. I'm on a 2k mac and colours are good and text is clear.
p.s. Never buy Alienware, its a Dell in a fancy frock and a high price tag.
Excellent information. I do buy Dell, and not Alienware, for exactly the reason you suggest.
Also, i would definitely Never recommend 4k unless someone chooses a behemoth monitor - i run 2k on 27" on a normal desk setup and love it.
Although, i do like higher refresh rate monitors (100+Hz). i usually set graphics to run around 60 fps Average, but when i get 70-80 fps for slower game motion, it's nice to know my monitor refresh isn't a bottle neck.
