Need help with combat training

So I go to bernard to train! i keep choosing maces because i like them for armour piercing. Issue is, for some reason, training with maces does full damage, bleeding and damages armour. so after 5 min or less ive barely gained a half a level in mace and im bleeding out, and my repair bills are so high i cant actualy afford to train, even though its free.

should i just say screw it and use sword/axe instead? does anyone have any advice on how to get better? i mean i know im low level and im gonna get my ass handed to me until i train up. but is there other ways?

Try training with the wooden weapons before moving on to the real weapons. Less skill gain (I think), but you also don't get messed up as much.

Gotta just train with master strikes followed by 1 or 2 strikes afterwards

There’s some glitch (?) where you take actual damage when training even with the practice mace. For other weapon types, using the wooden practice weapons won’t deal damage, or at least very little. Good ol’ Berny seems to have knocked a few nails into the business ends of his “practice” maces - just for fun.

It’s rumored that some people strip down bare ass naked before training with the mace, so as to avoid the cost of repairing armor.

Once your skills get better, this glitch (?) won’t be an issue for you.

use wooden maces. it still does a little bit damage because its a blunt force weapon designed to do just that...

but the practice lasts longer and therefore its easy to earn XP

what i did to solve the expensive repairing armor problem: kill a bandit or cuman and use his armor for training =]

Heal your self at the bath house.
Repair you rown sword at the blacksmith.
Trainig with Bernard adds like ai auto skill upgrade.Benefits can be slow.
To just get stronger / better stats fight the bandits and rogue villagers.
With skills comes perks.
Do the side quests. There is many. Train with the hunter, ask at the Inn keeper for jobs.
Explore the forests you will discover some awesome treats in chests find houses loot dead bodies incounter the Cumans.

Sounds like you should try going back to the trainer until you're somewhat confident with your combat abilities. Then you'll be able to better judge whether or not you should take engagements or not.

thanks all! in the end, master strikes is what helped out a ton. it gave me the edge to survive some earlier encounters and get my mace training up! By the time i fought runt, I was taking on 5-6 guys solo, and I think i killed runt in 2 hits...one overhead and a master strike.

cool, dont forget to dodge from time to time. it kills a lot of enemies stanima and their will to fight ;)

yeah master strikes saved my life so many times. it just gives you that edge to go into combos!

Care to explain what you mean? Most folks I've seen use riposte and master strike interchangeably, but the only two techniques that the game has that resemble what you're talking about are master strikes, which is a block and counter with a certain hit, and a riposte, which follows a perfect block but can be countered with a perfect block.
