It is probably a good option for training - though it does require getting through the first battle.
Sure, you get one guaranteed hit out of them but at a stamina and time investment. You can't afford that against multiple enemies. Also enemies have an annoying habit of master striking one of the leading attacks since they are just regular attack spam. Or just dodge one and combo is over. I prefer to attack where and how I think will connect rather than some pattern.
You're better off spending time getting master strikes perfected with Bernie. Rebinding block to right mouse button makes this so much easier. Stab works as mouse wheel up.
For practice it is much better to have a range of opponents of selectable skill and 'toughness' so you can 'get' the decision making subset 'down' before working on decision and speed... or before you have done an enormous amount of 'training of mechanical actions'.
Ideally copying the mechanics of the From the Ashes arena to one of the other 2 unused ones would be a good start... for reasons, the Merhojed camp one might be a bit unweildy frame rate wise, but Talmberk could be usable after you have completed the Neuhof quest, and until a sensible place in the main story or you build your own.
I may be perseverating on this a bit too much, as you are right, you would hardly ever be able to use combos in the gank-fest multi-opponent combat of this game. Combos are not needed in the tournaments either, so again, why bother.
Its too bad that there are not more one-on-one fights available, where technique could have more applicability.
Overall I have made some roughly 900 completed devices (~300 each in 3 play throughs).
