Most of the armor is either found in the treasure chests looted or granted as a reward finishing a quest or won at the rattay tourney. You can buy it but its not as good

I get a screenshot of my armor specs as most often I wore a padded tunic over the plate armor
You should have a ton of different armor parts from looting and doing the Kill the Capt of the bandits quest This was my main armor but as I said I also wore a blue padded jacket over it. Once you get high stats over all and are of good homnour in every town citizens with refer to you as sir knight regardless of what you wear. Armor must be maintained as well. cheers

And Juanita answered the question about Armor benefits - you can run through the entire game in Medium-Weight armor and live just fine, but the interaction between different types of armor is rather complex - maybe you should just play the game and learn
Mostly I’m interested just for the roleplaying aspect of it. Plus it’ll be fun. I figure, I’m only going to play this once as a melee type, I might as well go for broke. Next time I’ll stick to light armor.
The protection I currently have is fine.
One reason I asked, is that I did get a plate cuirass, but I guess it wasn’t good quality. It didn’t offer as much protection as the brigandine I've currently got.
So basically, you just have to put together the pieces as you acquire them, be it via looting or trading. So you get the leg and arm covers, the gauntlets, the helmet, and then a plate cuirass? (And of course you wear the gambeson and mail under the plate.). It’s the torso covering I’m not quite sure a about.
Throughout my game play I learnt that what applies to the game engine learning thing the bandits we encounter reflect our skills and stats and strengths. Its designed to train us until we start to meet the levels and exceed them they will then introduce dogs to further test us. For many this is too hard but its just a mental thing dogs are very easy to kill. Warhorse uses very good tactics to try and break the players attention.
You'll see even though you wear the best armor your skills with swords and bow will be no match for Cumans.
Take your time and explore do the activities and side quests it will add hundreds of hours and also its gets you into the world of KCD. Balance your armor and swords so your suspicious is good you dont go attracting attention and most of all never give up :)
just for illustration not get mod lol

Rattay Tourney armor Lords of Leipa is not great either, the black Pete's armor is cool thats one part of what I wore , borrowed screenshot

There's a lot of armor if you need a set maybe look on nexus Mods but you can get the best from quests as I said and looting bandits and Cumans.

The majority of the 'stereotypical' armour that you are referring to is referred to as transitional armour, which existed mostly between the mid 14th century (around the time of the Black Death) and early 15th century (I'd say ending around the time of the Hussite Wars).
So at the time of the game, in the early 1400s, full on suits of steel armor were not common. That’s what you’re saying? And that is why such armor is not readily available in the game?
So there is not really a way to piece together something like what’s in this video? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5hlIUrd7d1Q Those suits are from the late 1400s.
Henry likes to be noticed. Ain’t no sneakin’ around much for him, except for a little recon now and then. In fact, he was about to buy the bright white version of the Milanese Brigandine, but it was a bit over the top. A good, fancy jupon will suffice to dress up the drab, brown thing he’s got now.
Actually, I (or Henry, sometimes I forget we’re separate people - and that Henry is not actually a person) was also going to get some plate chasseuas for the legs from my man in Sasau. Then I realized I couldn’t wear my boots with the plate leggings, and I really like my boots because, ever since I learned hot to fix them, they help me run fast - usually toward my horse as I frantically spam X. So I kept the composite chausseues that work with the boots.
I haven’t gotten a closed faced helmet yet, but probably will soon.
I use his real character for my GH library wallpaper. I think I'm a fan hehe

Yeah I'm not 100% I'll like that closed up view either. I think it deadens your hearing too, doesn't it?
Maybe I'll get a closed up helmet for bigger fights, like when I'm intentionally attacking a bandit camp (I'm only halfway done the Talmberg portion of the bandit camp activity). But for travelling maybe I'll keep the bell helmet.
I got a taste of the limited view while wearing a Cuman leader's mask during some recon - when I ended up having to fight some too. Not too bad, but didn't do it enough to really get a feel for it.
I use the Translucent Visor mod (not the Transparent one) which allows you to see a little bit better but still keep the motion of the visor coming down every time you draw your sword. Helps with game play and immersion both!
And I got a full chest plate (Nuremberg chest armor I think it's called?) from a buried treasure chest that has pretty good protection vs the brigandine stuff
You find them in the Woods by exploring or do Bernard Bandit quests.
What you cant use for yourself you just sell.
Everyone is calling me knight already 😆 but could be strengt or perk rather than armor.

I had a shiny plate cuirass already but this one got better stats.
