once you roughly know where the bandits are, you may ask for help to bernard, who will slaughter the bandits, and then complain about not being able to hang them...
remember you are not Medieval Agent 007 ( not at this point at least ), you are just Henry ; a poor guy who should follow orders
after you find ginger and report, the main quest is not time limited ( but the following step is !!! ), Bernard is back at the training field, and there are many side quest you should be able to complete at this point ( look for the stars on the map )
PS : you need to choose the perk 'stealth kill" to be able to use a dagger ( it is not required to knock people out and then kill them )
you can also attack them on your horse with your bow, or charge - run with a sword... sneak in their camp and kill them while asleep, attack them while they are far from each other to have a much easier " fair fight"...
Just to add to this, if you're playing in hardcore then you might consider running back to Skalitz as soon as you wake up in Rattay since there are 3 factions that fight there constantly and a save/sleep point just down the road in Rovna. This lets you save-scum while scavenging for valuable loot and gear from the daily pile of corpses.
but in order to really enjoy the game, i suggest not stealing any armor / clothes on corpse. steal their money, their weapons and maybe their gloves, or even only their weapons, and buy stuff from shops
still breack locks, and pic pocket everytime you can, ( to get exp ) but don't steal anything which isn't quest related
there you will have a good increase in gears quality along with your skill and the story, and the early side quest will still make sense ( being rewarded 25-100 groshen while you have 2K in your pocket and wearing 6K armor on you really "kills" the game )
From my own experience, the game relies heavily on the meta, take your time, literal days if you need, to train with Bernard. It's not just you learning the mechanics, it's also Henry getting better and better (or vica versa, don't know how to put it better). Armor was secondary for me, once I bought Assassin, it was good enough to ward off the occasional bandit (not Cumans, of course).
or if you don't have that DLC, you can just go for the regular Treasure chests (20 of them) many of them have good armor and weaps
cleary skipped my mind on the alternate ways of doing things; probably because one video i watched put emphasis on quests 'failing' if too much time passes by etc
which following step would that be? the main Q line after reporting to Bernard? (ie the part where he kills the bandits?)
the investigation should lead you to Ulzice, you can delay it as long as you want, BUT once you go there ( learn to read !!! ) and get a cinematic, you better stick to the main quest in order to get the most enjoyement ( and not end up with a dying man to ask question to )
when the main quest are time limited, there is always a back up to allow you to go further, even if that lead to the death of many
i see, haha - went there, learned to read and then asked the scribe about the dude im looking for, he told me where to find him but ive since been exploring in the meantime - guess i best go take a gander!
