Good early game weapon/armour?
As title really.

Am up to the part where i need to kill 2 bandits in order to 'find' Ginger - currently i only have the gear given to you when you join the town guard (gambeson and a fething stick...) i did manage to acquire a Burghers sword and a falchion and an item of clothing or two that were ever so slightly better than the gear you start off with.

Problem is, apart from the obvious lack of skill both in and outside of game, i've got 2 opponents on my arse and the best weapon i can 'use' is the bloody stick... anything else uses up too much stamina and even the stick doesnt last much longer either.

How much time can go by ingame before a mission 'fails' ? because if i can f*ck off back to town, train with Bernard (assuming he's back at his station and not still at the stables) then i might see if i can get some better gear/skill etc but in the mean time im struggling to take these 2 bandits down with the 'basic' gear i have.

any recommendations?

ps: if i buy a dagger, will i be able to auto-kill one from the get go or will i 'fail' by not initiating convo with them prior to engaging?

during this quest you are supposed to report to Bernard at each step ( if you don't, he yell at you )

once you roughly know where the bandits are, you may ask for help to bernard, who will slaughter the bandits, and then complain about not being able to hang them...

remember you are not Medieval Agent 007 ( not at this point at least ), you are just Henry ; a poor guy who should follow orders

after you find ginger and report, the main quest is not time limited ( but the following step is !!! ), Bernard is back at the training field, and there are many side quest you should be able to complete at this point ( look for the stars on the map )

PS : you need to choose the perk 'stealth kill" to be able to use a dagger ( it is not required to knock people out and then kill them )

you can also attack them on your horse with your bow, or charge - run with a sword... sneak in their camp and kill them while asleep, attack them while they are far from each other to have a much easier " fair fight"...

Just to add to this, if you're playing in hardcore then you might consider running back to Skalitz as soon as you wake up in Rattay since there are 3 factions that fight there constantly and a save/sleep point just down the road in Rovna. This lets you save-scum while scavenging for valuable loot and gear from the daily pile of corpses.

Skalitz is indeed a very good point to get end game gears...

but in order to really enjoy the game, i suggest not stealing any armor / clothes on corpse. steal their money, their weapons and maybe their gloves, or even only their weapons, and buy stuff from shops

still breack locks, and pic pocket everytime you can, ( to get exp ) but don't steal anything which isn't quest related

there you will have a good increase in gears quality along with your skill and the story, and the early side quest will still make sense ( being rewarded 25-100 groshen while you have 2K in your pocket and wearing 6K armor on you really "kills" the game )

If you're going with Sword (skill), a good early-game sword can be bought from the Rattay swordsmith, called Assassin. It's affordable and has decent well-balanced stats for early game. As for armor, don't be picky, take what you can. I'd say a beginner's set may be the padded armor pieces, you can take a full set from the bandit you kill in the forest when you investigate the Neuhof massacre. Even earlier than that, take/steal what you can, you also get to keep your gear from your brief tenure as a Rattay guard.
From my own experience, the game relies heavily on the meta, take your time, literal days if you need, to train with Bernard. It's not just you learning the mechanics, it's also Henry getting better and better (or vica versa, don't know how to put it better). Armor was secondary for me, once I bought Assassin, it was good enough to ward off the occasional bandit (not Cumans, of course).

If you have the Ancient Treasure DLC, go for some treasure hunt. It makes Hardcore much easier.

or if you don't have that DLC, you can just go for the regular Treasure chests (20 of them) many of them have good armor and weaps

Wow, cheers for the input guys - was honestly expecting a 'git gut' comment and to have everything devolve into pointless back and forth, haha.

cleary skipped my mind on the alternate ways of doing things; probably because one video i watched put emphasis on quests 'failing' if too much time passes by etc

which following step would that be? the main Q line after reporting to Bernard? (ie the part where he kills the bandits?)

I went in swinging blindly. If your fast enough you'll get the first few hits to kill on the first guy then you'll only have one other guy to deal with.

the investigation should lead you to Ulzice, you can delay it as long as you want, BUT once you go there ( learn to read !!! ) and get a cinematic, you better stick to the main quest in order to get the most enjoyement ( and not end up with a dying man to ask question to )

when the main quest are time limited, there is always a back up to allow you to go further, even if that lead to the death of many

you can stop after the Ginger or On The Scent quest and do all side quests and activities before resuming the main quest
