Knock the guards in the starting area out for a bow and arrows and then use it to kill the sheep near the combat arena until they no longer respawn. You will get hurt at first from firing the bow, so ask your mother to heal you.
If you want the highest strength possible before leaving the starting area then be sure to pick the strength choice for both of your starting game choices. If you do this along with the other two things I mentioned you should have over 9 strength when you leave the area.
Practice with Bernard in hand to hand or with the sword, axe, or mace.
Kill the bandits at the camps around Rattay.
Hunt.
horses are way more easy
I usually hit them so the go towards a corner, that way I can control them so they don't run off. But yes it's a grind, but the strength exp is given from each hit rather then the kill, so while it's nice to kill em (for that sick #gains), the important part is hitting them.
The reason I pick cows over horses, is due to cows having more health, you want a target you can keep hitting. But I understand why you go for horses.
Once you get to Bernard just train with wooden weapons with him and go around killing camps / hunting game. You will get tons of strength.
The easiest 6 strength in the game comes from Reading books though.
