Speaking of which, too bad there isn't a better mechanic for switching to secondary melee wpn without going into inventory. There is for bow, so why not? Or have I missed something?
Axes are likely also a smart choice, but it seems me that the "headcracker" perk and maces go hand in hand, if you take that.
I like the heavy spiked warhammer and shield against heavy armored opponents. Then go to Longsword against the lightly or non armored rabble.
EDIT: It occurs to me that using a longsword and no shield saves you needing to repair a shield and also saves you the weight of a shield. Add to this that longswords are lighter than both axes and shields, and this makes them a good weapon for those just starting out. Their weakness is that they'll be less effective against armored enemies, and that I don't think they can block arrows as well as a shield.
So, TL;DR, axe + shield is versatile but heavier, and you can't repair the shield at the grindstone. Longsword is lighter and saves needing a shield, but is vulnerable to archers and armor.
