Patch 1.5 - Pay Indulgence
So I stopped playing around 1.4.3 and just started again last week. Early on found the boxes to pay indulgences in churches. Sometimes I can't for days and sometimes I can and it's 100 grochen. I always pay it, but mostly to see what it does... and I have no clue.

So started looking it up. Found 12 articles and the offcial patch notes. Every last one said "it washes away my sins" and that's it. Ok....

Then I looked for threads on the offcial forums and steam and no one has mentioned exactly what they do.

Did I miss a lore entry in the codex? Does it exist--perhaps I'm bugged and don't have it.

So what precisly ***game mechanic-wise*** does Pay Indulgences at churches do?

Probably the same it would do IRL? Likely the devs intent given their apparent levity towards matters of organized religion.

But keep paying it and let us know...

It helpes you gain Happiness/Reputation in the specific Town/Area.

Edit: I Think it helps with Crime and Wanted Levels too, but i'm not sure about that.

If you committed a crime you are forgiven for it.

Did you witness it firsthand ?
Because I read the same everywhere, but I was never able to SEE my reputation rise because of indulgences. Unless it takes time (hours ? days ?), and/or is a very limited amount…

Hmmm, well not noticing that and it's certainly not helping with this problem either: https://steamcommunity.com/app/379430/discussions/0/1742231705654696692

I have seen it mentioned (possibly on one of the loading screens, or maybe a wiki), that reputation changes do take time (on the order of a day or two). Like, you can't overpay a merchant on a first purchase to boost your rep so you can immediately rip them off on a second much larger trade. For crimes, especially unwitnessed ones, you're probably looking at 2-3 days I'd think for word to spread.

I'd hazzard that the impact of paying the church is similar. You probably need to give anywehere from 24 to 72 hours to see the full impact, because that impact spreads through gossip (that seems to be what the reputation system is trying to model).

That's sensible and would make sense ; though I'd love if a dev could confirm. :-)

I used cheat engine to scan the game's memory and determined what it will do.

It will take any city where you have a reputation at or below 15 and set it to 16.

It improves your relations with the town. This is best used if you really screw things up and everyone hates you. Just be aware that it will fix your relations with the town in one big swoop and to do this it will take a lot of money from you.

So that means it's useless if your reputation is above 16 already ?

then you wont have to pay anything. notice immediately after you pay, you can't pay again.
so if there's a price, it will help you, and the amount reflects how much help is required. I've see it as high as 2000

The most I've paid at once was 42k or something, my Henry was a very naughty boy in that playthrough

Hey that makes sense! Lately I've been just paying 100 groschen but I thought I once saw it cost closer to 2,000 - I was beginning to think maybe I had imagined the higher cost. But aha, so the cost varies!

Henry has too much money right now, I'm going to have to start leaving 100 groschen tips on the tavern tables. . .

Just play dice with highest bet, and without cheat dice. It's much more challenging, you don't win nearly as often, and a lot more meaning when you do...
