-spam right click to jab instead of left click to full swing
-push forward into an enemy to "clinch" or grapple if fistfight, it's a strength check and you can gain points through perks as well
-backing up when he swings is an option but it might result in a lost grapple if he is already too close, requires timing/experience

He's supposed to be slightly overpowered, and lose is an option, too, just accept it. It leads to an alternative way of solving this quest.

Try sneaking up behind him while he's chopping wood and put him in a sleeper hold.

The fist fights are a way of levelling, str, Unarmed, agility (I think) and defence and maybe warfare, at the beginning of the game without any real consequences or dying. Use them as a training tool, even if you loose.

Losing to him is not the end of the world, you get another shot at him later on. Stick with this game long enough, and he's not even worth you're time to beat up.

The first time I played this, I didn't know what I was doing and went on to assume that it was inevitable that you lose this fight.

The second time I played it, I decided to see how long I could drag the fight out, just for the heck of it.

And to my astonishment, I won.

Losing the fight sets up a more entertaining plot, but the fight can certainly be won. I think I had my initial two points in strength, and kept backing up while I was fighting (which seems to be the secret formula for winning most battles). What you have to watch out for is that you have almost no stamina at this point, so even with an aggressive regimen of callisthenics you still have to pay close attention to your stamina bar.

There are advantages to losing the fight. It forces you to learn stealth and lockpicking, which will come in handy later on even if you don't plan on turning Henry into a burglar.

I may be missing something, but I haven't found stealth tremendously useful. Lockpicking, however, is an important skill to have mastered. I can think of three times I absolutely needed it, though there were alternate plot paths if I was a klutz at lockpicking. And my incarnation of Henry tends to rely on brawn and a lot of herb picking (which amounts to the same thing).

get your friends to jump him
I actually kicked the crap out of him 3 separate times. I had to restart a couple of times because of bugs and ended up fighting him on each restart.

Essentially, as others have mentioned, jab. When a jab lands and he's staggered immediately follow that up with a hook. If he grapples then kick him off. Whenever he comes in at you try to time your jab, then hook again. If you block an attack, follow up with a hook.

Fighting him was the most fun I've had in the game so far. Mostly because that was bug free.

Yes, and Q does work for blocking - even "Perfect Block" once you've had some training.

This thread is a mausoleum. Dead and buried.

Have the OPs been waiting on pins and needles almost four years for a better answer, do you think??

You're right... that's why the forum software doesn't delete threads after a certain amount of time. You can search on a given topic and find all manner of information...like searching through public records down at the municipal courthouse. Doesn't mean you have to re-open the graves and dig up the bodies.
