From what I've been reading, it would seem that moving the mouse forward and back or side to side is what changes the selection on the combat direction rose.
Don't I need to use the mouse to keep facing my opponent?
Or does hitting the Tab button keep me faced correctly, which would then allow me to use the mouse for other things (like altering the direction of attack)?
I haven't bothered using the Tab button yet because so far I've only had to tangle with single opponents (Kunesh and the mercenary tutor).
Since you are in the prologue you will need to play through the quests to open up further in game combat tutorials.
Failing that, there is a quite good steam guide to combat to peruse.
Also, *HINT* some combat situations are set up for you to fail them to progress the story.
The game locks you facing your opponent, even when you dodge or sidestep. Only holding shift or walking away from the enemy really hard will break that.
To win at fistfighting, spam quick attack/Jab which is right mouse button. Left is slow and lets them hit you back.
Sometimes the devices only require that you attack in tempo (such as Fehlen (longsword), which cuts from the lower left and then uses two 'thrusts' to represent a pair of thwart cuts which hit the sides of the face/head). In the remainder of cases a single change of direction (another small nudge towards the required 'next' guard between when the cut starts and the animation ends with the next attack starting).
If you watch the combat star, you will notice that if you have made one cut which forms part of a known device, the next cut will flash with a white highlight
