I did the duel and agreed to win for Zach AND agreed to lose for Ota. Ended up winning and it worked out fine. Losing just didn't feel right. (winning is in support of Zach)
I don't think it really matters either way. They don't hate you afterwards if you lie or cheat them. It didn't even affect my reputation. Ota will still sell to you at regular price.
You're thinking of the swordsmith in Sasau; Zach is the armorsmith in the Monastery courtyard.
On my playthrough I didn't even find out who was working with copper in Sasau as I didn't think of speaking with Zach's son.
