Not sure how they have changed since launch - I just recently started playing.
In case you don't know - you can still save and quit the game without a save potion. So when you play again, you hit 'continue' and you play exactly where you left off. You just cannot go back to that point if you die.
The save pots are there to prevent endless save scumming. They add a cost to the process so you cannot do it endlessly.
The game autosaves at key points too.
I think it is an awesome feature; nice balance of consequence and choice.
If anything, I thought dying is the -only- point where you can load an exit save, other than restarting the game.
Don't worry about wasting the potions: belladona is an ingredient you can get cheaply from any alchemist NPC and the stock regularly replenishes, while a single success yields at least three save potions. The more potions you make, the better your chances of survival: Nighthawk, Padfoot, and Bowman's Brew help immeasurably with a stealth game.
I carry a small number of potions on me, and collect more as loot and 'found items' than I consume, most of the time at least, with the flow of potions being *generally* into, rather than out of my storage chest.
There are 7 'home' locations in the 4x4km map which are available to you to sleep and save, with 6 of these being co-located with your storage chests, as well numerous 'safe' campsites in the wilderness which offer save and sleep... and a couple of additional beds which are quest sensitive, unlocking as you move through the game.
A third source of saves is the autosave on quest start/quest progression.
It is not typically necessary if you are playing 'realistically' to use the save potion, except if a long way from any home and preparing for an assault on a bandit camp locally.
well at the start of the game when four gold is a precious resource, and you can't read, you won't be buying too many of them, lmao.
1. Sleep in a bed for some hours
2. ESC > Exit & Save
3. Retterschnaps
