Seems like a bug where the equipment appearance jumps to around 50% damaged appearance, then begins to work correctly again once the actual durability stat catches up?
Also I don't think condition is affected by dirt, I think dirt is it's own separate thing, and condition is shown via rips and dents. So it could be dirty but in good condition, or in bad condition with rips but still very clean.
The strangeness comes in where all layers on all parts of the body become dirty at the same rate, when in reality it should progress from the feet up. Unless you hit the ground during a fight, or something like that.
Though shouldn't it only be dirty with the Mud icon next to the item? Cause it appears dirty without the icon
Edit:
Considering things like hunger and sleepyness only show the icon when you're getting close to max, which is when the debuff appears, I'm thinking the mud icon is probably working in a similar way
