So... dodging?
I did the sword tutorial in Rattay, and while I feel I have a decent understanding of most of what it covered, I have absolutely no idea whatsoever how to dodge attacks. The tutorial just said to move to the side or back, but after ten minutes of trying to sidestep and backstep, I gave up and completed that segment of training by just mashing WASD like a maniac out of frustration for several minutes.

How in the hell do you actually dodge reliably? I tried moving in the direction Bernard was swinging from, the direction he was swinging into, moving backward, tapping all of the above right as the green shield icon appears, tapping all of the above when the shield icon appears while also moving the entire time, and doing all of the above with my own sword held at various angles. I was not even once able to actually dodge while meaning to.

Weird. As soon as I saw him start to swing I would press any direction and it would miss and I'd get credit. Maybe it's the timing that you have to start the moment he starts to swing and waiting for the shield is too late?

Bump. I don't know how I got through this section. I button mashed, to be honest, after minutes of doing as asked andgetting nowhere. I've tried to use dodging in other battles with what limited clues I have from the help menu and skill perk, but I have no evidence it's even in the game aside from enemies dodging my attacks.

I'm very frustrated by it too.

I had no problem nailing dodge timing during the sword training , you basically press A/D when the parry iron appears instead of pressing Q. However, I can no logner perform dodge properly outside of said training. I thought it was an unlockable skill but nope!

when you see the Green shield use the key A/D + Space at the same time.
Oh, you're supposed to hit space? I couldn't for the life of me figure out what button did it (the game doesn't say)

Isan't it A/D + Shift to dodge quickly?

I did it a couple times but wasn't entirely sure how I had done it. The timed blocking is much easier and less risky to do I think.

I don't remember it mentioning anything about pressing spacebar or shift, I'll need to try that.

After doing some testing with Bernard, it seems to be timing based. You don't have to hit shift or space to do it. The timing window is the same as if you were going to counter with Q. It has to be super fast at the start of their attack to catch that window, otherwise you just hit buttons and nothing happens other than you forgetting to block and taking hits. So you just have to hit A/S/D at the very start of their attack, just as your about to see the green shield pop up.

Hope this helps.

Important thing to remember is that you can't already be moving.

The latest update broke some of the combat mechanics actually.

I can't get the Axe 'master strike' training done and instead of a repoiste, the 'quest' ended on a completed 'sword training'...

When you perfect block with the practice axe in the axe training you ended up deflecting and not countering.

Hold Q and double tap away from the swing left or right. (PC).

Watch their weapon VERY CLOSELY
As soon as they begin the backswing, immediately start walking the other direction.

So if you're holding "A" walking to the left in a circle around them, as soon as their backswing starts, let go of "A" and hold "D". You'll move away from the swing automatically and dodge it.

Actually you can, I tested that as well. I was holding A and at the moment of the attack I hit D and it immediately side stepped away. You just have to time the dodge.

This is wrong, all you have to do is hit A/S/D at the right moment just as if you were countering.
