Yeah, just go to the wooden bridge and jump off of it. Seriously, it will hardly hurt you at all.
Once you're down there, just run away from the town (the guards will give chase if they see you) and into the forest.
You cant pick locks because you dont have proper skills and knowledge. Later you learn how to pick them better.
Abandon all the garbage you are used to from games like Skyrim and enter the world of roleplay.
In particular, post Talmberg you will get a tutorial on lockpicking. Ignore the teacher, walk around the building, and try a very easy lock on the barn door. It'll open easier. For some reason some of the first locks you encounter are identified as very easy/easy, but are really quite hard. It does get easier as your skill increases.
