Set to Stereo/2.1 + Virtual Surround in Windows Playback
But do you actually have 5.1 or 7.1 Speakers?
Headsets don't count.
Yea that means you must select Stereo/2.1 in Windows Playback
then enable Virtual Surround
Yes of course
If in the following windows is 5.1 or 7.1 selected switch to headphones/stereo.
Then you should be fine with those settings to then properly capture 2.1 and/or Surround based audio in all forms of Games/Movies properly.
Users should only select 5.1/7.1 in Windows Playback when they actually have physically hooked up such systems that use 3x 3.5mm Jacks
No it uses one, the other is for the Mic
You need to double check your Speaker Connections to the PC.
Do they use 3x 3.5mm jacks or Optical TosLink?
You need to set Windows to 5.1 Surround.
2.1 and 4.1 can work with proper center channel only dialog as well by enabling "Virtual Surround" in the enhancements section of your Audio Device; such as Realtek or Creative. However for 5.1 you must have the 3 jacks in the correct placement, so Center actually is Center, which is for dialog. And for 5.1 you want Virtual Surround disabled and actually select 5.1 Surround within the OS. This should dictate and carry over properly to Movies, such as when using VLC Media Player; however some movies will have multiple tracks to choose from, such as one for 2.1 Stereo and one for 5.1 Surround. If the movie was made for surround sound (like Saving Private Ryan for example) selecting the Surround Sound Audio Track will be key to hearing everything properly. Games also might load up for first time defaulted to Stereo, you can often change this to Headphones (for Sonic/DTS usage needs) or Surround Sound. If a game ONLY offers a Stereo option, then enable Virtual Surround at this time for that gameplay; what this will do when a media is stereo but you have 5.1/7.1 surround will do the opposite, it will push the stereo 2 channel playback to ALL of your speakers.
