They will need to fix it, but to be honest you're probably better off training with real maces, since it's the same thing either way. A workaround to this issue is the Better Trainers mod, and going to Sir Robard in Talmberg for Mace training (can get it up to 16 instantly with a decent amount of money). That's about it, since I don't think that can be patched without a more comprehensive modding kit that WH will hopefully supply soon.
Need some sort of closed helmet or at least Kettle Hat, padded coif, mail coif. Need good gambeson, not a shirt, good hauberk, good cuirass or bringandine, outer jacket/vest/jupon on top of armor. Plate pauldrons plus gauntlets, leg plate chausses, mail chausses.
Relatively weak protection will be on hands: beware of 'third wonder' chain combo.
With such a set of armor you can train half an hour - an hour without a break.
using a mace (just lightly with a practice weapon!). I was left bleeding and battered within a few seconds, and it was some time before I opted to train with Bernard again, only to find that I could train for hours with a long sword, short sword or axe without being even hurt or having armour damaged much.
Now I opted for the wooden mace practice training again yesterday with a new post patch Henry, following long sessions with wooden axe and sword in which little damage to me or my armour occurred. With more experience of blocking now I fairly quickly put Bernard out of action chiefly by following a perfect block with a stab, which seemed to biff him in the teeth, about 5 times to finish him. I was amazed to knock him out with a practice weapon as I hadn't given him a scratch with anything but the mace (the armour smasher!), and I was on skill level 0 with mace. My joy was shortlived though when I looked at my armour, which cost about 3K groschens to repair, even after I used kits on the less damaged stuff - the Saxon Gambeson was down to 0. He'd only hit me a few times with magical master strikes. It seems the practice mace is acting more like a real mace than a mere stick of wood. Good training but I only got to level 2 so it was rather costly in repairs.
