Except that you can find that out. When you first question him at the inn, he states he is a cloth merchant. However, when you catch with him at the door in the night, he says he has a quarrel with the other guy from the house, whom he allegedly supplies with salt and spices (! - not cloth). He is lying, and moreover, would an honest merchant break armed into other man's house in the middle of the night?
