Reputation lowers randomly for doing nothing.
I have been testing reputation in Rattay. If you take something like a weapon even with no others around, sometimes your rep goes down, sometimes it does not. Then even if you take it and it does not, it will randomly go down later while just running around. I replicated this multiple times.

So I assume if you want to keep your rep up, you cant take anything that you do not buy? That is not very "fun".

When you say "take" you mean steal, right?

So you're not doing "nothing." Maybe, just maybe, if you want to have a good rep, you shouldn't steal stuff.

Everything in this game is considered stealking besides buying items and looting evil doers. If there is noone in sight, why does my rep go down for taking anything? (sometimes it does, sometimes it doesnt.) I just wish there was a cut and dry system of saying if you do X = y happens everytime.

yeah i have serious reputation problems in Rattay now cause of some unseen force ticking it down even without me stealing OR killing enemys (as in i let them go when they beg)...

I didn't do scientific verification on the following theory but I had a similar issue and concluded:

If you *look* shady (i.e. wearing cuman or bandit armor) this will raise eyebrows -> your reputation sinks. Solution: Get some respectable gear.

Hint: The description of the clothing helps. For instance those basic leather armors you find a lot are usually worn by shady individuals making you look shady to. Also you want to avoid bood stains.

Are you hitting anyone on your horse? Or running into them with that boar perk? Your horse colliding with people hurts them and thus lowers rep. Even if they hit you. I don't race through towns anymore after discovering this.

Nice little theory but I run around in "respectable" gear exclusively yet still my rep sometimes just drops.
I'm starting to think it has to do with serious haggling.

Then they shouldn't call it "reputation" if they are instead treating it like karma.

Well some of the best stealth gear is also the highest charisma gear.

Well I'd be more inclined to believe that players aren't very good judges of "nobody noticed me." Perhaps its left slightly random/spotty to allow for players to be able to steal, but still inflict a net trend downward if they keep doing it.

ever since i choked out the baliff and wore his clothes around town Rattay has been somewhat disagreeable with me. I ended up killing everyone that was killable and moved on to other towns.

however, OP if you do anything to aggitate people, like fail communications, haggle, bump into them, accidently trespass, run through town on a horse, steal, eat people's food (sometimes), get noticed sneaking, etc your rep goes down.

best solution is bandit camps

For me it solved the reputation issues with the guards.

You can check which group of people youe reputation gets lower with. If it is the traders then yes haggling is at fault. As soon as the face on the coin (mood indicator) you see during haggling starts to get grumpy you're gonna loose reputation (people precieve you as "scrooge"). This does not necessarily mean that the deal fails, you may still get the desired price and item. It is just that the vendors will be displeased.

In theory, yes.
I cleared all bandit camps in the Sasau region and unfortunately it didn't help with my rep there at all. Not a single point.

Everytime you fail in a haggle you lose reputation
darkrajin Mar 7, 2018 @ 1:41pm
By fail, I mean if you haggle, and they say to low and make a counter offer that is considered a failed haggle I believe. If you want positive rep you give them extra money when you haggle.

You lose 1 rep if you haggle in your favor, always. I think if you fail you just lose a bit more.

I think the coin matters:
  • Smily face = rep gain
  • Normal face = no rep change
  • Grumpy face = rep loss
