Monastery Quest...
I keep failing this quest and getting kicked out before finding Pious. How come it lets me fail? Can you still beat the game without doing this quest? What a lame quest...

Just do your daily duties before sneaking around at night to find information. You can make extra potions all you want as long as you make the one that Nerval requests and have him approve of it, so you can use those extra potions to trade for lockipicks from Cellarius.

You can get on the good sides of the enforcer monk guys, so they basically don't give a ♥♥♥♥ what you do at night and you can get away with skipping out on the daily prayer stuff as long as you don't overdo it. Daily prayer is a good time to start picking through the chests in the dorm rooms, since normally there are people in the room or sleeping in front of the chests at night

If you're not enjoying the mission, just look up a guide for it. I haven't looked up a guide since I was little. But this quest was such a pain in the ass and was so tedious that I broke and just wanted to pass it and carry on. You'll be glad you did.

My lockpicking skill is very basic. So how can I go through their chests? I saw they are all set to very hard. Do I need to do this quest to beat the game? No easy way to skip it?

If you're not good at lockpicking, you can do favors for different monks and there's a way to get your hands on the keys by doing that. This way you can get outside at night and get back to your gear for a weapon. I'm sure it's still possible to beat the game without doing this quest though, since you can get kicked out and all. I have no idea, I found the monastery infiltration thing interesting so I finished it

The lockpicking is absolutely optional. You can get to everything in this quest without picking a single lock. there is a monastery key hidden in the kitchen back room for the part(s) where you have to get out or some room that is locked
Try to find out stuff by talking to everyone about everything. Listen to conversations of the monks. Sniff around everywhere. Do the favours they ask you to to get basically a free pass on all activities (but not violence, stealing, or trespassing). Eventually, Pious will reveal himself or you can guess who it is. Or you can just kill all the novices until you find him, if that is your sort of play style.

Dealing with Pious is part the main quest. The monastery life quest is optional. Either lockpick your way into or climb up the scaffolding and jump in(you will take fall damage). I spent a fair amount of time in there trying to do it non lethally as well as the side quests in there.

I'm confused. So you are saying you completed this quest by climbing the scaffolding and jumping into the church with all your gear and just killed pious and ran out?

Possibly? No idea, I did it the "proper" way

lol. Got it. Yea I broke the mission. I climbed scaffolding and jumped down on the roof which overlooks teh court yard. All 3 of the other novices in white robes were there and I just shot the guy I suspected was Pious and I was right. All hell broke loose and like 15 Sasau guards flooded the court yard, but I just hid and then waited 24 hours. The next day I just hopped off the roof and road off. I don't know if this was the intention of the developers though because in my journal it says I finished my undercover work in the monastery and found the killer. On this save I didn't go in at all.

Too bad I had to Assassin Creed this mission. I think it was a cool idea to take us into the monk world and I like the mid evil chants a lot. It was just so tedious and boring ... and I think buggy. Like I was going to areas I was supposed to and still the guard would tell me I was in the wrong area and give me a warning.

I am curious to know what happens though if I did this mission. Any spoilers are welcome.

Can someone freaking tell me how to get inside and outside the monastery aside from this quest!? I need to get the damn necromanic book from there but locks are very hard and I am not able to bypass them. Read some guides and they said that doors will be open but they aint!

Alright, I'll give some stories from my adventures in the monastery.

Firstly, I found that I didn't really have any issues with being arrested by psychic enforcers who knew my every move, I'm not sure if my game was just behaving better than others or if I was doing something differently, but I only got arrested, like, twice in the entire mission and that was for blatantly getting caught stealing and whatnot.

Anyways, you can talk to the various novices, find out their backstories from them, all that jazz. From Antonius I found out that I can get lockpicks by talking to Cellarius, who I promptly went and talked to. He wants food for lockpicks, but all the food in the entire monastery buys you, like, two lockpicks. Fortunately you get a crapload of ingredients during your potion making job, so I made a bunch of expensive ones and sold them to him until I had about 10.

My character has Insomniac and the perk where you don't lose energy when you stand still, so I only ever needed a couple hours of sleep to get energy back for the activities during the day. I would spend the nights sneaking around, stealing stuff and looking for info. eventually I found my way into the guard's tower and stole a sword so I had a weapon to kill Pious with.

During my adventures at night, I found the two enforcers down in the basement, drinking wine like buffoons. They invited me to join them, and tasked me with stealing more wine for them or being punished. I did the mission for them (with "help" from another novice whose name I forget) and they stopped punishing me for skipping out on mass.

Since I was free to do as I pleased during mass now, I picked the locks on all the chests in the Monk's dorm, and found a dagger in Antonius' chest. When I confronted him about the dagger, he told me something along the lines of "Don't piss me off, I'm dangerous", which I took as evidence that he was Pious. So, I waited until night time, found him when he was alone, and cut his throat with his own dagger.

Just for funsies, I also murdered the two enforcer ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and put all three bodies in the jail cell before escaping the monastery and retrieving my stuff

From the guard's room there's a door going into the monastery, you have to pick several locks to get through but it puts you straight into the library with the forbidden books
If you can get your lockpicking skill to ~10 and drink a padfoot potion, they will be effectively 15, you can bypass the locks.
