Peasants steal your items.
Because it would be much more realistic for the guards to check your character, even check your horse but totally ignore the 50 items on the ground right next to your feet when searching for stolen stuff, right? ;)
Yup I stole the queen of shebas sword after I found the 5 pieces because I didn't want to pay the guy to forge it. Forgot it was in my inventory, got caught with stolen items in ledetcko, didn't care Iforgot I had the stolen sword on me. Remembered like a week later IRL when I couldn't find the sword in my inventory. I went back to ledetcko killed every guard and eventually I found the one who had my sword lol
Early on I stole a load of books (including the speech book) from Rattay. A guard caught me and before he could search me I started dumping all the stolen stuff on the ground thinking I was clever and could just pick it back up. All the stuff disappeared. Days, hours, weeks later I learnt more about the game and I wanted that speech book back (I believe it's the only copy?). Found this thread and decided to give it a try.
I went to Rattay at night and knocked out every guard I could. I stole their headwear so I'd know who I had checked, finally I came across a guard with about 20 books on him, including the damn speech book.
Here he is:
