6GB VRAM for HD textures :(
I spent over £1,400 on a PC new build so that I could play on ultra settings. Thankfully, I have been enjoying just that with many games.

However, my Graphics card is a GTX 970 with 4GB of VRAM.

The HD textures for this game require a GPU with 6GB of VRAM, that's locked me out of it until I can save up a considerable amount of money for a new GPU card.

I've also noticed that no matter what settings you set in the game, low, very high, ultra, (with HD texture off), the resolution of the graphics don't even change from potato quality.

Don't know about anyone else, but I'm pretty miffed.

I'm using a 1080 ti with 11GB of vram. KCD with the HD texture pack uses just 3.5GB, the original textures 3GB.

If I sit outside a castle wall I can see the wall actually change appearance from low-res to high-res. This isn't how hi-res textures work in the real world. Hi-res textures are a complete replacement. It seems that somehow they are linked to lods, occlusion and sharpening.

Warhorse, please get rid of whatever cockamamie graphics engine you are using and swap to something that works out of the box.

In IT, if the answer to a problem seems complex it's the wrong answer. Good solutions are simple solutions.

You can use HD texture pack. I have GTX970 Strix myself and I use it with no issues. The thing is this HD pack is not that great. These textures are a tad sharper and that's about it.

Those HD textures load up close and the system for switching from low quality textures to high quality texture in this game is one of the worst I've seen.

GTX1070 8 GB / ssd and normal AND HD both have the same pop-in effect. Buildings just a splotch of brown color, people without heads, no one is wearing clothes, dogs and cats living together.

For the record though I had this prior to 1.4 but it was quite limited. Since 1.4 it seems to of doubled.

Still no clouds when it rains too but that doesn't have anything to do with the low res problem you describe. ~shrugs~

You spent 1400 quid on a PC and only got a 4GB GPU? Should have gone to Over clockers or Novatech and please don't tell me you bought a GPU with the inflated prices due to the current mining trend?

LMAO! no, no.. but he sounds like he's from my neck of the woods though :)

I got my bits n bobs from SCAN, in Bolton.

I will be asking a lot more questions and paying more attention, next time I buy parts.

Dogs and cats living together. ROFLMAO. Awesome movie reference there. I would never try to use the HD textures even if I had 6GB. The texture pop in on high is horrific. NPC faces up close during conversations look like Oblivion graphics with no normal maps untl the textures finally load in. And it happens all the time. It is like the game keeps no cache of recently used textures and loads almost all of them on demand. Makes everything look awful until it all loads in. And one would think with the horrific load times the textures would already be loaded in.

I did try out the HD textures with my ATI R9 390 8GB, and I found them to be not particularly impressive to be honest. There are a few things that seem to look slightly better, like the leather texture on my saddle, or if I get very close to someone and look at their clothing texture. Honestly, I wouldn't sweat it. In real gameplay I would be very surprised if anyone even noticed a difference.

Pretty much this for me too. I switched back to normal textures, slapped everything on High (for my max) and my card is barely hitting 40% now at 74c and the graphics are practically the same. Still a lot of headless people but only when I sprint on my horse. Just want to note a 2nd time that this was not a problem for me before 1.4. Played on Ultra everything and at worst I had a couple roadside puddles that wouldn't load in time. Now it's practially everything and I'm on way lower settings.

Hmm. Maybe I will try Ultra. Texture popping is so bad on high. It happens everywhere all the time and is pretty noticeable. Even after a long load for a conversation which makes no sense. But my card isn't being taxed at all.

I'm curious - are those of you with lots of bad pop-in, puddles/heads missing, running on SSD's or spinning platter hard drives? I do get some mild pop-in but it feels more like a crappy implementation of LOD. I never get anything close to missing heads or anything like that, and am on a fairly generic SSD.

Gtx 1070 (8GB), i7 4790, ssd samsung evo, 16gb ram;

1.3.3, 1.3.4: Ultra = mild popin textures seldomly
1.4: High, non-HD = extreme popin textures in rattay and frequent everywhere else.

Dang... that... really blows. Hope they fix it. Best o' luck.

I'm doing a full reinstall eventually because I may of screwed something up. Why I didn't bug report it. I don't think I did though and removed my execute and user cfg files, mods, uninstalled HD packs, and still having the problem but I did "mess" with a ton of stuff too. When I'm sober next week I'll look in to it.
