Pickpocketing - Immediately Caught
Hi

I notice that when I picpocket, I am sometimes immediately caught as soon as I even activate the pickpocket option; before the pickpocket wheel even appears.

Is this intended, I.E. losing before you've even started the pickpocket minigame?

Edit: All tests were made against sleeping targets.

Be an honorable and chivalrous knight you dirty fiend.

I found the same thing. It seems to happen to me after pickpocketting something more valuable. What I started doing is uncrouching after a success, facing away from the victim, then crouching again in between pocket picks. Not sure if that is allowing a timer to expire, or resetting the pickpocketting danger meter or whatever, but it seems to be working.

It happened to me sometimes when my pickpocketing skill level was low. You could try some of these, if you didn't yet:
- the perks Comrade and Crowd Control seemed to work for me well, if I was similarly clothed / there were more people
- pay for some lessons in pickpocketing (miller Peshek or the charlatan in Sasau)
- read books about pickpocketing (miller Peshek should be selling the basic one)
- a Padfoot potion (+5 thieving skills temporarily).
Since pickpocketing seemed to be too random for my taste, I trained it in a barn at an inn (like the one in the Glade, after I saved in my room by sleeping) where are more NPCs sleeping, with the perks I mentioned, dressed also in underwear. At the lowest levels I trained mostly with the miller Peshek and also on surrendering bandits.

Are you sure the targets were actually asleep and not just laying there with their eyes open (they do that)? Also, there's no one else in the room (same as above, laying down but still looking at you).

It's generally harder to do sleeping targets at low levels for w/e reason. I think it's better to just pickpocket the occasional wayfarer or bandit when possible.

As for why it's harder, I observed the following:

1. When they're sleeping, if they're looking at you(sleeping or not), the chance that you'll successfully pickpocket seems to be lower.

2. If the area is relatively visible(e.g. you're holding a torch while pickpocketing), it also seems less likely.

3. Pickpocketing by their feet always seemed rather iffy when I try it. Now my pickpocketing is at 15 so it's rarely a problem, but it seemed to be a coin flip whether I could do it or not before.

To slowly, but surely gain pickpocketing experience, you can just repeat the training exercise with peshek until you get to a satisfactory level(assuming you are still able to train with him). If you manage to get a good amount of time in to pickpocket a guard(like rattay ones, not the ones in monastery), you'll usually spike in levels quick after that due to the sheer amount you can steal.

Seems the main issue with lvling pickpocket is that you build up an insane fine in whatever area you're lvling in.

I leveled pickpocketing by breaking into houses at night and picking sleeping people. Never got caught.

That's incidentally my exact same strategy.

With 04 noise, I've never ever failed the pickpocket minigame when breaking into houses. So far all the times I've been caught have been due to the game automatically failing me when I pickpocket them.
