When this message pop up my game won't let me progress I keep hitting the button to close the menu but nothing happens..

You wouldn't want to enter this fort anyway.
After doing so, changes to the game are more dramatic that you might think - many quests become disabled, many characters disappear and so on. Additionally, one of the locations becomes hardly useful and is ravaged - not metioning which because spoilers.
Keep playing your game and stay out of Vranik. There is no point in continuing the game afterwards. One should do it when they are satisfied with their playtrough.

also, can no longer progress from this screen............my game is frozen at the screen, same issue as OP. Game over--you have to go into the fort to progress the story, right?

You don’t have to do the main quest at all if you don’t want to. At that moment it is best to simply abandon it - you have progresserd far enough to unlock all side quests and after Vranik and consecutive quests (the story extremely gains momentum at that point and until the end you should not stray from the MQ, not to mention some side quests and activities becoming PERMANENTLY disabled, like hunting down bandits and Cumans for Bernard, Robard or monastery Custodian) the game will be hardly worth continuing.

Some people reported that removing all mods solved this issue.

I solved a similar issue by deleting all my configuration files and verifying game cache (to redownload them).

Thanks for this info guys. As a crumbly, I've been playing games for a long time and whilst I really love KCD it does test ones dedication doesn't it. The developers have really missed a trick if this game does not work with mods, they are what keep punters interrested in playing a game for years, just look at Skyrim etc. I must admit I have the easy Save mod which is probably messing it up, but as you say, do I really care about the ending? I am just going to ride around looking for treasure and enjoy the scenery!

They should have disabled mods until the game was solid. The problem is that mods become outdated very quickly as core game elements are patched.

Yes, 'showler' you are absolutely right. And I should not have broken the habit of a lifetime of never buying a new game until at least six months after its release, so all bugs get sorted out first. I was so desperate to play a decent rpg I threw caution to the wind!
