Black mark next to items in inventory?

some of the items i picked up have a black mark next to them kind of like the mark when your sword is covered in blood only black and not red, What does this mark mean?

Means that the item is dirty. Go wash in a trough or go to a bathhouse. Being dirty just reduces its net charisma increase.

It means you got poop on it.

I doubt it. Pooping is not featured in the game, I guess people will eventually explode. :)

There is literally a quest where you need to hire poop-carriers and there are toilets everywhere :)
