Nightingale doesn't like the way I dress.

I talked to Nightingale in the church yard and he complains about the way I dress.

I did get the kit from the guard armoury and have equiped it.

I made sure that everything I am wearing is clean and in at least 50% condition.

What am I doing wrong?

Not done this quest so this is just a guess. You may need to wear gear that makes you less conspicuous for those quests.

Nothing, you just aren't wearing enough armour to his liking. Here's a tip. Reload a save before you talked to Nightingale, then practice with Captain Bernard to level up some sword/mace/axe skills. After you're comfortable with the combat mechanics, do some bandit hunting and take all of their gear. Chances are, there's even an unsaddled horse in the bandit camp you can steal and use as quick transportation when encumbered. Then sell the loot and buy better gear from the armoursmith. Only then you can start the quest with Nightingale, only this time you're a walking tank of destruction.

At least, that's how I did it.

well I saw a gameplay yesterday that you can even do it without any of things you get in armory. Just tell him that it will be fine (or something like that)...

I've been having issues with this quest as well. It wont let me sit down in the tavern so I can't go any further. Is this a known issue?

One big thing, it's a tiny spoiler, but nothing major, on your rounds you will go to the pub, SAVE before you go in and do anything, it bugged for me, time froze, I thought I just had to wait around for time to pass so I went off to do training, missions etc for several hours, time didn't move on so I had to go back to an old save ASI simply saved over rather than new save spots forcing me to replay hours worth of the damn game to get it in bugged.

As suggested, I ignored nightengales comments and finished the quest just fine.
