Edit : I stand corrected. Keep reading.
You cannot claim other people's horses as your own.
The horse isn't as good as the stable ones, however. It's free but by the time you reach that DLC odds are you already have the best paid horse.
Sell? No. But you can trade-in your current horse when buying a new one for a lower price.
If you buy a horse before you get pebbles you can ride pebbles but if you whistle, your first horse appears. Inventory with the saddle is on that horse as well. You can still ride Pebbles but it will stay where you leave it and you won't be able to sell or trade it in unless Pebbles is the first horse you get. I don't know how it works with the horse you're given with the dlc.
Buying a different horse will cause your old one to be lost.
Yes - the the horses from the bandit camp are roughly equal to Tier 3 horses purchased from stables. Very sad you can't do anything with them though, other than ride them around.
New horse must be purchased.
Do not waste money trying to buy one too early.
I found the best horse at Merhojed. And the best Saddle at Neuhof. The horse armor you can get for free from a treasure chest stash helps out alot also. Some good horse-shoes are needed as well.
Old thread - but imo Horse doesn't really matter to much except for courage.
I only use a Tier 1 or Tier 2 horse - ever. Bought early - works well.
