Why were people complaining about this game being racist?

Serious question. I'm a black dude, and i've been hearing rumours about the game being racist, and I just wanted to know from people who actually played it, what their opinions were. I understand people have beliefs, and it doesn't make them less of a person for having those as long as they aren't actively wishing or causing harm to people.

Personally, I don't see the big deal, if it takes place in a time period or location where people of color weren't really that common or even around at the moment, then that's fair enough. I wouldn't expect a game set in Mexico to have caucasian people strolling around. Or a game set in Africa to have caucasians.

If this horse has been beat, or it's been discussed then point me in that direction, otherwise, i'm just curious, as i'm considering getting the game myself, and I don't really want to buy something that's blantly disrespectful.

The SJW complaint is that the game is racist because it doesn't have non-white- NPCs (except Cumans, I guess) in 1400s Bohemia. Yes, that complaint is ridiculous and nonsensical because there weren't black or asian or hindu people in 1400s Bohemia. You can always buy and if you run into something you don't like in the first two hours of play, refund.

Essentially this game is the opposite of Call of Duty: WW2, which has black female nazi soldiers in its multiplayer.

Oversensitive race-baiting is all. As you said, the game is set in a time and place before multiculturalism was a thing and way, way before anyone other than explorers, traders and armies travelled anyways further than the next town (and only then if they had a very good reason to).
Same sentiment as yourself here; if there was a game set in 900 ad in central Africa I would be laughing if there were any characters other than sub-saharan Africans in it. Some people just like reasons to be offended :)

it's just an overreaction to nothing meaningful. The game has some level of racism (against the Cuman') but the ideas, message(kinda not? I mean it is a revenge story. but) and goals of the game have nothing to do with racial hate.

Yeah, that's it. There were some people of color in big cities (because of trade routes like the silk road) and quite many in countries hundreds of miles away, where slavery was not forbidden. But in the countryside of Bohemia, there was no reason why people of color should be there.

However, some people think because some people of color were seen in cities like prague and many in countries like spain, it's racist not to have people of color in the game since the game takes place in europe.
