Combos help a lot when you're doing a lot of dodging
But no matter what, even when training with Bernard with real weapons, I still never get a combo to work. I can land ripostes, but no combos.
I feel like it's a bug.

Combos works just fine. I use them all the time.
Yes, combos in general DO work, though practicing them is a bit frustrating. Sir Bernard will dodge/interrupt/perfect-block you about 80% of the time, making it hard to master. I do wish that there was a training dummy or something so that you could practice them without all that, just so you could confirm that you are doing it right before practice/real combat. I have noticed that the sword and board does seem to not like combos and the dummy idea would make it easier to confirm.

So that's probably the issue, since you also have to unlock master strikes just like ripostes.
Combos also won't work if any move in them is perfect blocked or riposted and Bernard is great at that.
