It's just so frustrating how they expect me to navigate with no light. In real life I could do with with just candlelight, but games don't have real life senses or adjustment.

It took me a few minutes to find the stairs, and the doorway down there was just barely visible. It's like walking around blind, sure there are 'some' candles, but they don't exactly light up the entire room.

Looks fine to me on the screenshot. There might be something wrong with your screen settings or your eyes. Its supposed to be dark. Yea there are some issues with lighting in really dark areas, but thats always gonna be like that in games that try for real night time. Theres no way you have troubles finding the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stairs tho. There must be something wrong with your settings because the screen looks perfectly fine to me.
