Pick out the stuff you need to craft from your inventory at the alchemy table, open the book to the right and follow the basic instructions.

1. Pick wine as the base (left shelf)
2. Add one nettle to cauldron (top right shelf, drop into center cauldron)
3. Place two beladonna in mortar and pestle (from top right shelf to bottom right of table)
4. Grind beladonna (just use the mortar and pestle)
5. Place ground beladonna in bottom center pan for now.
6. Heat cauldron (default Q) until boiling (bubbles coming up from liquid)
7. Turn the hourglass (default F).
8. Keep pressing Q to maintain boil. Wait until hourglass finishes.
9. Repeat steps 7-8 1 more time (for 2 "turns" total)
10. Use center pan, and add to cauldron.
11. Repeat Steps 7-8 (1 turn total)
12. Take phial, hold E to use on cauldron

When it says boil for turns you can bellow the cauldron as long as you want to get it boiling, it won't count a turn until you actually use the hourglass.

Not sure I agree. I'm nearly certain I've guessed on the length of a turn by just the length of other actions (e.g. I maintained a boil while also grinding). Its more that there is no such thing as "overcooking," you just need to make sure its at least boiled for a turn, that sorta thing.

like so many other features/systems/perks/skills in this game. it is completely unimportant.

i mean, why is 'drinking' a skill???
the only time i "drink" is when i save my game.

I just press Q 2 times. One turn ends when the fire starts to fade.

Yes, this is the important bit that isn't actually explained in the game. It technically isn't possible to "over boil" your ingredients. You do need to use the timer, but any time spent still boiling after the sand runs through, is completely ignored. Just make sure that if the recipe requires the brew to cool at any point, that you do actually wait for that. I waited for both a lack of bubbles AND the coals to stop glowing - but it's likely just about the bubbles.

if you press it 10 times you do not have to wait afterwards you just have to grind the beladonna and add it and then you can fill up the potion

Because drinking has some pretty interesting mechanical effects?
1. Alcohol as a food item doesn't spoil.
2. As a food item, it has a pretty sizable nutrition value (fine wine is like 20).
3. The drunkeness mechanic has some benefits on its own
4. Potions count as alcohol as well, so being able to drink more of them or to stay standing while drinking is helpful.

The goal is to have Henry start at crap, and through practice be pretty capable.
