I accidentily cheezed it - and here's how:

One night, I was thieving in Rattay and stumbled upon a bunch of fancy knights, all fast asleep in the garden outside the north wall of the castle (the garden where Hans Capon sends you to pick flowers).

I couldn't resist: so much shiny gear! I knocked them all out in their sleep. Nobody noticed anything.

Very slowly, carrying hundreds of kilos of junk, I walked to my room at the Inn to the west of the castle.

Turns out it was the night before the tourney...
The next morning all the knights stood around the ring in their underwear!

Seeing that, of course I signed up.
They all fought without any gear at all. It doesn't get any easier than that.

I did it just the one time... but I'm not sure if it's cheating. I mean, it's just the sort of thing my Henry actually does!

Tournament is for high-level, skilled players

Don't mindlessly attack, use masterstrikes and stabs after head-hitting cliches

That is hilarious, and also very sad on the part of the game...the fact that seasoned fighters would just wake up, realize they are in their knickers and just shrug and fight a tournament anyways...big oops there lol.

i got the head cracker on a guy twice but he did not go down and pulled a master strike on me,
he won the tournament and the game seems to be working as intended.

"High Level, Skilled Players"

Lol funny. All you need is the "master strike" ability and 1v1 combat is easy. All you need to do is Master Strike, smack them in the head, rinse repeat.

Get a high level in strength and defense. Learn the counter strike ability and all you will have to do is press q when attacked. You will strike back and you will hit you enemy. With high strength you can push your enemy and strike them due to being caught offguard.

As said above, if your enemy is better than you and master strikes you every time you try to land a blow, don't attack, use master strikes against him and only try to hit when he's staggered.
With longsword and no shield your master strikes should even defeat him very easily, you just need patience.
As soon as you are switched to a weapon with shield then master strikes won't deal any damage anymore but will often stagger , that's when you have to try and land an effective blow
if you have headcracker perk, try to hit the head, there is also a perk (forgot the tree) that depletes some of your opponent stamina when you block with a shield, it can be helpful when you have to use a shield though always remember that if you want to rely on master strikes to quickly win a combat having a shield is bad because you won't deal any damage anymore with your master strikes

my Henry aint that good atm, but I am winning every tourney I enter...
I still need to learn the combo strikes though.

The game became a broken counter fest about 3 major updates ago. Prior to that, bandits and random feebs did not have sword mastery. Now everyone does.

I've mentioned, complained, begged, and fussed about it but apparently it's a feature now.

The bludgeon used to even kill those skrubs in full plate back then, it is my most prized weapon.
