I don't see it as a waste if it somehow actually helps your Rep in that Town; however I'm not sure if that's true or not, since I've not once seen any Rep numbers change because of this, or any other evidence of such a thing being true.
Making 500K in this game is easy so I don't see a problem with it.
Once I get set a few hours into the game, I've already got all the money I'll need. Almost everything else I do with vendors I often give them more then their asking prices, as this more easily raises Rep. However you have to pay attention to this in some towns because if your poor Rep lays with the country-side Civs or the town Guards; then giving Traders a good end of a deal isn't really doing you any good if that Rep is high enough (like above 70-80 with each merchant)
Maybe that's a limitation of the mod, or maybe giving alms doesn't change anything.
C. Can't tell.
Only paid church two times, first to check what happens, second time for achievement. There is also a perk that restores reputation faster, forgot the name.
Paying fines with guards usually helps keep rep with Guards but may lower it with Civs depending on the crime(s). However you should also be able to keep the rep from lowering too low by actually accepting to go to Jail. As Civs can recover from some rep loss in tbat immediate area when you agree to serve your time in jail. It can be much harder to gain back rep with guards though. I hope KCD2 does a better of this all around because why is it some town rep is broken down like Guards, Skalitz refugees, Civs, Country-side... but some smaller towns it doesn't have this break-fown. Overall I feel that makes it either too broad or too narrow as to where and how you can improve rep. 70% through the story and side quests and all my town reps are 85-100 except for Uzhitz (58) and Ledetchko (36) and I don't remember what or how I can really get these up before the end of the main story. I just started the quest for Sir Hans to get the perfume /potion so I got the recipe and about to start with terrorizing Ledetchko which I don't remember doing on my 1st playthrough so I guess my rep can be gained there once I finish this part.
So yea I'm still constantly playing around with the game mechanics cause some of it makes no sense and some stuff that would have made perfect sense for the devs to do, they totally did not do. Like how many of the areas where you have a cook option don't work properly or with any common sense involved in how those were coded.
I feel like certain Mods were a must-have; like ones for brighter arrow feathers so you can more easily find and retrieve arrows that missed their target and such. Or a mod so the Herbs have better visuals, since ones like Belladonna and Mint were originally so hard to make out.
I don't have any problems with how reputation works, nor do I really care about it. But using the 'Infamous' perk helps a lot if you want to keep it high. When carrying stolen items, after robbing the tailor, you're better of not paying any fines and lose it all again. Also don't like going to jail, as it feels like wasting time. Watching that wheel spinning for several days is just plain stupid. On the flip side, when guards are very suspicious it can actually boost your speech every time you're stopped but manage to talk your way out if it. And getting guard reputation up is as simple as joining a fight and helping them out.
One thing they should actually change is stolen items mechanic. When you're not caught while doing it I don't see any reason why anyone should know it's stolen, especially in other towns. Another thing is torches while sitting at an Inn or inside shops. Nobody carries one but player is supposed to have one at all times. And many times those guards that stops you aren't carrying one either ... pot and the kettle.
Yea well in KCD2 the game devs said your crimes, fines, and such will be logged and also presented to you at various times through various way. I hope they do a good job of this. In KCD1 you yourself basically have to remember all of that and for each town and such too. I never had gone to jail at all in my 2nd playthrough, yet in Rattay I had the option to give the Chruch around 1700 (G) ~ I have no idea for what. Only times I was caught was for small stuff (otherwise I'd use an older saved game) and for those small things I either paid my fine or was able to talk my way out of it. So WTF is this 1700 option for? Course I went ahead and gave it; why not since I had like 500K already at the time, but still. I'd like to know WTF is it for and/or why/what would cause this. This is never explained anytime/anywhere. Everything I'd heard over the years are just pure guesses from the community, nothing more. I'm 70+ % through my 2nd playthrough and under Crimes it has me down for 1 Civilian. All of the rest were legit enemies such as Bendits/Cumans. And of course, Runt. My rep is all 80+ % now in every town, even the Monastery.
