how do i lock onto the target I want?
I keep locking onto the bandit in the back of the group, and it wont let me switch, letting the bandits get behind me and ♥♥♥♥ me. Ive also had like 5 instances of targets running away after surrendering because i couldnt unlock onto their friend to finish them. HOW DOES THIS WORK ?? Its very frusterating

TAB to lock onto the enemy under the cursor. In case this is wrong TAB again to cycle the list... or use mousewheel scroll to go up and down the list.

Shift while held cancels the lock altogether and you can point the screen centre to the next target you want.

While you are 'hard locked' using TAB you can defend against *any* of the opponents who attack you, and can perfect parry, parry-riposte, masterstrike against *anyone who is attacking you*. The lock will temporarily shift to permit a follow up to the parry, but will return to your current chosen target. Useful if he has minimal armour, or is wounded to quickly finish off the first enemy.

You can train Mutt to take down fleeing enemies, but it is considered a crime to murder in cold blood surrendered opponents. Be wary of doing so while guards or civilians can see, or if you are roleplaying a 'good Christian'. You can minimise the proportion of those who surrender who flee by moving the fight so they remain in front of you, but the fleeing of some of them should be seen as inevitable, especially at first.

Yep, the combat lock-on is about as functional as the game's collision

I use an xBox controller. The lock on toggle is the B button. I can press this button if I want to switch targets. I don't have experience with KB & M.

The game has an auto-lock feature that can not be shut off. In my experience, auto-lock seems to switch to the nearest (to Henry) enemy and as they move around it will switch targets. The player seems to have very little control over target selection.

However, what I do is keep moving and try to space the enemies in such a way that I control the one selected. I do this by causing enemies to block each other or trip over any available terrain. Things like hillsides, fire pits, tents, rocks, or even bushes can be used. Also try to keep an enemy between Henry and any archers.

Kill order is also important. I target easier soft enemies first, saving plate wearers for last. The game will allow you to switch weapons mid fight. Swords are best for cloth targets, axe/mace for plate, although the mace seems to work well for everything.

I usually ignore the option to mercy kill unless I can do it quickly and I'm not in immediate danger from other attackers. If a target is down, then he moves to the bottom of my kill order. If left to live, a wounded enemy that gives up usually wanders off or goes to a nearby bed to recover; he is no longer a threat.

The auto-lock feature is hard to control for sure, but it can be done. The key is to keep moving and be aware of your surroundings. Try not to panic. Plan attacks carefully and try to predict beforehand what could happen after you engage. With proper movement and spacing, you can whittle them down. It just takes patience and practice.

Scroll with your mouse, it will make you swap targets.

No need to risk getting smacked by disengaging with shift
