but at least you can end the game based on your free time with the save and exit option.
Around 100 locations in the world have beds (there are beds in around 300 locations in total). Not every bed is a saving bed, but you *can* find about 1 in 10 overall do, and they are close to most points in the world (rarely more than 700m away, and usually much closer). Day cycle gives a save at 1hr intervals. 10 of the saving bed locations also have your stash location, and may be your most commonly used.
You can save at the bathhouses.
You can finally save using a consumable which is lootable from the world in enough quantity that I had to keep moving excess to my storage. You can at need also buy it, but it is "expensive" (100 silver) in a world where finding traders with enough money to buy all the looted/stolen crap I am carrying around is a 'major problem' as they can only give me so much money... Or you can buy the ingredients and brew your own for around 4silver, and sell the surplus, or pick the ingredients for free and brew them.
You can save and exit the game. Usable to suspend the game state if you need to stop playing. Now.
Overall this is ample flexibility for me to *never* have a problem with finding a way to save 'right now' and only a *very* mild requirement to occasionally collect a few spare saviour schnapps or to offload the excess supply I have of these, marigold decoctions, bandages etc I have collected and not used.
I got my answer, and here’s yours : Next Level Main Menu allows to save anywhere and adds an F5 quicksave shortcut.

Also can combine it with the Unlimited Saving mod if you like, also working as of the above date:
