Try to use console command g_showHUD 1
It sounds like you actually had some mods that altered your hud even though it was not their primary purpose. I've seen mods that modify game files and if you don't make the backups of the original files, you may be unable to revert the changes done by mods, but on the other hand it is kinda strange that you are not able to revert this by letting Steam to check your game files, because usually game files that don't match the original ones are replaced. Well, this is a long shot, but you could manually delete all dll files and exe files from the game directory and then let Steam check the files again to make sure they will be downloaded again. If that doesn't help, the mod may have been modifying something in the pak files in which case it's like searching for a needle in a haystack, so in that case you could as well just re-install the game.
You're welcome. If you have the list of mods that you had installed, maybe explore their pak files - these are just regular zip files, so you can open them with programs like 7zip, WinRar and such. There are usually some files such as xml or lua script files which are usually readable in standard text editor like Notepad or Notepad++ where you can easily edit them and pack them back into the original pak file of the mod. These files may modify some game variables that may affect your visual experience in game, they may also introduce new features into the game or even modify the existing features through lua scripts. There is a chance that some mod author was experimenting with two mods in one and forgot to remove the undesirable parts of the mod before publishing it. If this is the case, finding what causes this problem would probably save many people from headache including the author of the affected mod.
BETTER COMBAT AND IMMERSION COMPILATION
AIM SPREAD DISABLER
NAKED MOD
MORE PERKS
DURABLE ARMORS AND WEAPONS
MORE RESPONSIVE TARGETING
RESTORE HALBERDS
again, thank you for your time, really saved my ass here
Interesting. I've never used any of these mods, but if I was to guess, I would say Aim spread disabler, More responsive targeting and maybe Better combat and immersion compilation could cause your issues and yeah, some mods may change the same values as some other mod and so they can be in conflict with each other. The conflict itself may be the reason your visual experience was degraded.
Think of it like this: You have two mods that look for a game variable called This_variable. Both of the mods need to change its value to a certain different value, otherwise the mod won't work as expected or maybe even won't work at all. One mod will do this: This_variable = 1. Second mod will do this: This_variable = 2. At this point, the second mod will work correctly, but the first mod that expects This_variable to be 1 will stop working. Now add a third mod which removes This_variable completely from the game and none of the first two mods will work correctly. To make it even more bizarre, first mod changes variable called Yet_Another_Variable from 1 to 10 and your third mod will stop working correctly, because it expects Yet_Another_Variable to stay in its default value 1, so none of the mods work correctly and if all three mods change the visual experience of the game, it will be broken just like in your case.
Well I don't use mods and I had the HUD disappear on me. Well I was in the middle of combat and accidentally hit the wrong key which turned it off. I forget which key it was. It took me ages to get it turned back on again.
