For free fighting 1v1, I find the long hilted arming sword to be a more relatable experience - the 'shape of the fight' is quite close to that of (specifically unarmoured) sword in two hands historical use.
For the more constrained fighting of melee and 1vmany - I prefer to use shield and a weapon in one hand. In practice this is more often a mace or hammer than a sword (mostly because I modded to reduce the weapon damages, and swords are not as useful vs heavy armour) - but using a sword and shield is viable. Shields are much better at defence than the maces and axes, but are less vital paired with a sword - except that they are useful to charge down archers with.
It is possible to fight with shield and a weapon unarmoured (though not especially wise). While this is very risky with only a weapon, especially if archers are in play.
I agree with what Lieste says.
I tried the short sword and found it good but not as defensive as the long sword. The good old club did wonders to start with.
This is my favourite weapon in screenshot , also with the assassin long sword in my inventory with Yew bow I found in a treasure chest . There is many treasure hidden in the forest.
I found this awesome weapon on a cuman leader.

As I said I am not very good with words like melee etc :)
For Longs if you use a shield you lose the ability to use all combos. So that's mainly it as I found it
Great vs multiple get the perk for poison for damage blade and just watch em fall over.. and with that extra reach stabbing them to apply the poison is great.
I already have 10 strength but only 7 agility.
Also, I prefer to have more combos readily available and the reach is also easier (imo) to control spacing.
With both bow mastery and the longsword I should be able to cc relatively ok.
Treasure hunter dlc? Nah. But I probably will use the interactive map instead lol.
