start with easy locks and train a bit, once your skill goes up it gets really easy
its really not that hard you just need some training and coordination
I am playing in PC with a xbox controler, but to picking locks I use my mouse and keyboard, its very easy.

Lock picking is very easy once I changed my dpi

And there you go. I use the controller with no problem. Different strokes as they say. If one way doesn't work as well as you want try another. I'm not crazy in love with mini - games every time you turn around but it's there so figure out how to defeat it. Heck I'm having all sorts of probs with the sword play but it's not going to deter me. I just started making poison. :>)

I was picking very hard locks on pc with mouse and keyboard once i got the luck of the drunkard.

At anytime in my inventory, I only ever needed 5 lockpicks.

The rest just sits in my trunk, and I reckon I have more than 50+ of them now.

Bullshi maybe before the patch. But it's really ezaf these days.

You are wrong, just start with easiest one, use mouse and keyboard. It may jiggle a bit but it will do as long as you spin it right...also use skill that makes ur lockpicks more durable.

I cant "work it out". My mouse goes super fast (even at 800dpi etc), or if I switch to controller its worse.

Oddly the first lock I did without even thinking it was so easy?! Now im trying I just cant lol.

BUT... im glad its hard. Reward factor and all. Pizz easy locks are lame (cough cough Bethesda cough).

The problem is that many people have mouse accelerator programs firing in the background without even realizing it.

I couldn't pick locks for love or money until I did two things.

First, I went into the hardware settings in Windows control panel, found the tab that controled the pointer, turned the accelerator off (by unticking the check mark), and then moving the speed slider as far to the left as I could stand without disrupting everything else I do on the computer.

Second, I went in to the game settings and set the speed slider to the first tickmark from the left (all the way to the left paralyzes it).

Even so, I only attempt lockpicking when the sweet spot is as close to the central spoke as possible. If it isn't, I escape out of the attempt and start over again, Sometimes it takes several tries to get the sweet spot to fall where I want it to.

YMMV, and the key is exactly what kind of system and mouse you have. In the beginning I would set the mouse sensitivity settings in the game so low that I would be a sitting duck if anyone walked in on me. At one point I was resetting the sensitivity before I would attempt to pick a lock, and immediately setting it back after I suceeded. I don't have to go through any of that anymore, but I have almost 20 points in lockpicking (and my Henry isn't a thief).

Don't give up on lockpicking, because there are a couple of points in the game when you'll really need it (that and unarmed combat).

I turn that ♥♥♥♥ off immediately lol. Im running via LookingGlass anyway so a Windows VM on a Linux host. So just for continuity.

I like it, didnt think about the future. Thanks.

Still cant work out how I did it first time without thinking, must have been stoned.

Practice makes perfect. I love the challenge so all good, but it is very unforgiving. Im wondering if a real lock would be easier lol.

The way I learned lockpicking was by opening everything I could get my hands on at Peshek's in Rattay. He has a practise chest behind the mill that's good for a point or two of skill. If you have any spare cash I think you can buy a few points from Peshek or one of the other millers. I think the charlatan teaches lockpicking (or maybe pickpocketing, or both) but that comes much later in the game.

Keep at it because it keeps getting easier every few skill points. And for those really important locks there are special potions.

First get basic training from the Miller in Rattay.

Use the locked chest behind the Mill to level it to 5, it will relock after every lockpick if you step back from it.

At 5 get the next level of training from the Miller again.

Then just go around the towns at night and lockpick people's house and business doors. They are usually easy locks on houses, harder locks on businesses. Pick the house or business door then just move to the next one and repeat. Sneak (crouch) when doing it and your stealth will go up to.

At 10 train with the Miller again, repeat the process.

Add your perks to the skill as you gain points to make it easier.

In 2 nights you should have lockpick up to 15 or more.
