Runt doesn't wear a helmet in normal mode (he wears one in hardcore) and he's vulnerable to thrusts to the head. In any fight against a trained opponent the trick is to get them off balance. Try retreating and then suddenly thrusting while he's running to catch up. And if you've built up your strength and have some warfare skills, get him in a clinch and whack him immediately after he breaks off.
Most of the time the archery tactic probably isn't a good idea: do you really want to try to parry a longsword with a peasant's bow?
Just a few of them will get him to surrender. If you got headcracker and got lucky, he surrenders easily, almost instantly.
What's "wrong" with it? I'll tell you. It actually requires you to learn the game mechanics to progress in the story. If someone with 10+ stats struggles at this point, they clearly haven't learned the necessary basic mechanics. Stats alone aren't enough in this game.
You can learn this from Bernard and you definitly should.
First off, your skills on your chosen weapon have to be at least 11 or 12. Same with defense. Go see the Captain and bring up your skills, you can usually do a good job just using wooden weapons if you don't want to spend time and money healing, etc.
Next, load up on potions. Buck's blood and the one that enhances your Strength and Warfare skill work best and they stay active through the fight if you take it at the initial assembly point(before the bridge is crossed).
Next, not a very warrior like thing to do, but you need to minimize your damage before that final battle. if you are bleeding out or have less than half health you will have a tough time. You can do ok through the first wave of bandits and the Cumans. The next task is to take out the archers. Chasing them too far into the fortress brings their reinforcements and you have to fight too many before your soldiers get there. I have killed all but one and he runs off in a different direction and it throws everything off. It's not a big deal to fail that quest. Then when you get to the church, stay close to the wall to avoid what archers are left.
The worst part is when defending against the counterattack. You can lose health big time there. Your best bet is to support the army, stick to the edges and fight the one or two who get past the melee. Then get against the wall again while they batter open the door.
That should put you in a good spot to defeat Runt. High slashing blows to the head work best with a sword because he doesn't wear a helmet. I'm guessing you can do the same in the tougher mode but use an axe.
Hope this helps.
Get lucky. Play smart, play slow, play patient. Pick your attacks and most of all keep from dying yourself.
