I got him after the intro at the mill from Theresa.
However if you do want to have him around, you have to feed him meat ocasionally so he won't leave you or disobey you. Everytime you give him food his trust towards you gets higher
Exactly, smoked sausages are the most cost-effective dog food. Even better is to get him to hunt a hare and then feed him hare meat!
Yes, maintain Mutt at 100% obedience by praising then feeding him. Feeding Mutt causes his menu to close, while praising him brings you back to the menu, so praising him first saves you some bother having to open the menu again.
You can also try praising then feeding Mutt multiple times. After a fight, when Mutt's obedience goes down after he has taken a few hits, I praise him and feed him a sausage at least twice to bring his obedience level up quickly.
I find that Mutt tends to run away more if I set him to "Aggressive" before a fight; he really goes for the enemy and takes more hits. I only do this if it is a bad situation and I need his help to escape. Otherwise, I set him to "Free" and keep my distance from the enemies, riding or running away to cause them to separate, then turning back when the last guy has stopped chasing me and siccing Mutt on him and attacking him as he walks back to his camp. Nowadays I am heavily armoured enough to be able to survive most fights, so I keep Mutt at "Free". If I get ambushed, I let Mutt decide what to do, and only sic him on my opponent if I really need help; for example, to distract a heavily-armoured opponent so I can land a blow on him.
