2. You can attach AND detach containers, meaning you can pour the water in, attach the container, desalinate the water, drink and/or detach the container to gather more water.
Also, taking the container with you is less efficient than just drinking from the still as far as I've noticed, as durability on the attached container doesn't go down from drinking while it's attached, but does go down from drinking while it's in the inventory. Not sure if that's a bug or a feature.
(Wow, it's hard not to use the other sense of "still"!)
