Is there a way to dig UP from a cave?

Can you create an exit by digging upwards somehow? Or building stairs or a ladder? Sometimes I wander too far and it would be nice to be able to dig back up to the surface.

You can dig back up, its purely rng or something along those lines though.
Cant confirm since i havent played the game in a while, but i do recon you can, just make sure youre not digging below the deep sea water etc. or else it wont work.

I thought there used to be a way years and years ago but I can't seem to do it now. i can only dig the ground.

The only way I have ever seen digging "back up" happen is if you previously had a cave entrance there and covered it from the surface, leaving behind a "collapsed entrance". That you can dig "back up".

I have done plenty of digging otherwise underground and never got a way up.
