Do you die if you step into the void?

I am wondering if you die when you step into the void.
I've only tried dropping items. I'm scared to risk to step into it.

It won't even let you. I have sort of tried various ways I could think to go into the void but so far I have been unsuccessful.

I am pretty sure it just acts as it's own terrain type, impassable by you and other ground critters.

Best to treat it with caution but I don't think it's a run ender.
