Pemican Questions

It would seem that Pemican lasts forever; but, Prepared Pemican does not. Is the idea to make Pemican and store it as a non-perisable food supply and only turn it into the more nutritious Prepared Pemican just before you are going to eat it?

Is option 2, to make Prepared Pemican in advance only if you have slime to preserve it (make it last longer) ?
