Giant Rats

What are up with these giant rats? They never drop aggro regardless of benighnety and despite being omnivores aren't tamed with fruit.
How the hell am I supposed to play the game? This makes no sense.

Giant rats will be placated from food or seed items. I would suggest trying the "Casual" or "Custom" mode with "Peaceful" enabled if you do not enjoy the hostility mechanic. There's a handful of ways to dispatch of giant rats. Let me know if you need further help.

Yes how do I dispatch them, I don't mind the challenge what I mind is their homing methods. Its becomes me running around the island trying to get items while always with rats and spiders on on my tail only a few turns behind.
