How does one use hitching post's?

Soooo i'm already decently stablished in my game (AKA i'm not going to die unless i do something really really stupid)

So considering i have about 4 goat's and chicken's runing around and constanly steping on my crops and makeing them very very sad i decided to make a hitching post out of the way.

Problem: I have no clue how to use it.

It's in place. i even checked if i needed another set of rope (Even though you need one to even make the thing) and i'm not geting any option to do so in both the post or the animal's thenself's.

Face a creature that is next to a hitching post, open the action menu, and choose the "Hitch" option.
