Probably the best tactic is to lead them away into a far off bit of land / sea then ditch them. Mobs all* move at the same pace so it's easy to keep them at the right distance.
* Not sure about time skitters
Fire elementants can be trapped by water. Make a 'land bridge' out into the sea with a small island at the end (artificial or otherwise). Get them to follow you, then swim out to see and cut off their route back. Waterskins and sea water will put out fires, if you didn't know that, so you can usually keep damage down to a fairly low level.
It is, by the way, possible to tame abnormal enemies. Grind your tame skill up to 100% and it isn't terribly hard (take plenty of healing equipment with you though. :P )
I am a big fan of kiting the mob in question close behind and getting them stuck behind mountains or forests and then running as fast and efficiently back home. I have noticed these mobs have a shelf life and don't last forever. Also a big fan of luring mobs into a number of random cave entracnes and filling in the hole... they are rarely smart enough to make it to another opening unless its a straight line or super close.
For fire issues I either use one of my six bags of water or keep ash on hand in order to "Set" it upon the fire and put it out. Water seems to become infinite if connected to six tiles of water, so using some pure water on a fire is no big deal to me.
Also, I have never been a big fan of wooden bases for a few reasons: higher malignity to get materials for wall and floors vs stone, materials being less useful than stone, being flamable and taking a lot longer to acquire needed resources. I suggest digging into mountains and surrounding your area and farm with maple trees as secondary walls and mazes. Stone makes more useful tools so collecting piles of stone is useful even after completing your base.
Even in iron clad armor, shield and sword, I still take big hits from elite level zombies and cannot kill them with my tactics or arrows. I couldn't even imagine an elite kraken or skeleton mage. I wonder if there is anyone who can duel an elite zombie and walk away without the fear of enough RNG fails to lead to their doom.
