You sound like a new player still muddling through. I'd recommend following the tutorial, which walks you though making fire safely as well as teaching you how to make a water still. That's a much simpler path to potable water.
That said, a glass flask is an incredibly useful tool. I always carry one in my pockets and never have to worry about getting back to camp to refill my waterskins. As long as you have a container, access to salt water and fire, you'll never go thirsty. I'll document the process as I remember it for when you're further along and ready to try it.
The process for all glassware is quite similar. I'll assume you've mastered gathering simple things like rocks and poles. First you're gonna need a shovel. You'll also need to craft both a furnace and a kiln. You're also gonna need a little bit of limestone and a mortar to grind it to powder.
You need to locate both a supply of clay and one of sand. Fortunately, sand is everywhere and you can often find clay buried underneath it if you dig far enough. I recommend digging up a LOT of sand. This happens as a matter of course if you're putting a deep moat around your homestead. The reason you want a lot is because you should be looking for very light (weight 2.5 or lower) piles of sand to make your glass. Much of that weight transfers over as you grind your sand down, and you don't want to be stuck with 3 weight of glass to carry around everywhere.
So now you have ground down some refined sand and some limestone powder. So much for the inputs. You'll want to mold your clay (weight doesn't matter) into a blowpipe and fire it in your kiln. Last step! Take two piles of refined sand, the blowpipe and the limestone powder and blow yourself a nice flask and maybe some bottles (which also need bark corks) in front of your furnace.
Have fun!
Rereading your reply, you don't know what a flask does, do you...? It's not the same as a bottle.
Anyway, for new players/characters you are generally correct. Glass is an involved crafting tree that requires you to master the simplier gathering gameplay before you can try it.
